ABOUT CBAC

WHO WE ARE?

The Council for Black Aging Community of Montreal Inc. (CBAC) is a charitable, non-profit corporation founded in 1987 to address the specific needs of Montreal’s Black native-born and West Indian/Caribbean Anglophone seniors and to advocate on their behalf. CBAC is Quebec's largest English-speaking seniors’ organization.
Being a non-profit organization means that CBAC offers services without the aim of earning a profit, serving those who could not otherwise afford them, and retaining programs even if they are not financially profitable. All revenue after expenses is reinvested into programs and services. Our revenue comes from government, private, and charitable sources, as well as fundraising efforts. The Board of Directors, which oversees the strategic vision, policies, and financial planning, serves voluntarily without pay.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Council for Black Aging Community of Montreal Inc. exists to provide services, be an emotional support network, organize activities, and create opportunities for seniors to engage in social, recreational, cultural, and educational activities. Our goal is to prevent social isolation, foster continued engagement in the community, enhance quality of life, and promote, encourage, and assist seniors to maintain their autonomy and independence at home for as long as possible.

Goals & Objectives

One of our primary goals is to acquire and own premises for The Council and acquire a residence specifically to meet the needs of Montreal’s Black native-born and West Indian/Caribbean Anglophone seniors.

HISTORY& IMPACT

The Council for Black Aging Community of Montreal Inc. (CBAC) was founded by community resource persons who recognized that the needs of elderly members of the Black community were not being adequately met by mainstream institutions.

They committed to advocating for changes to validate the contributions of the Black community, ensure that government bodies recognized their needs, and uphold their rights as entrenched in The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
